FANTASY GENRE
LO2 2.1 - 2.2

Fantasy includes a multitude of sub genres, some of which share traits with each other. Because my short animation fits with the fantasy genre, I have decided to do some research into it.

Fantasy is one of the most popular animated genres among audiences. Many successful animated fantasy films and television shows have been produced over the years, including Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, How To Train Your Dragon, Spirited Away, and Toy Story. These films all differ in their characters, plots and worlds, yet they are all animated fantasy films.

A number of common sub genres of fantasy are:

  • Epic fantasy: Located in a magical world with its own rules and physical laws, the narratives and themes of this sub genre are on a huge scale and often revolve on a single, well-developed hero or a group of heroes, such as the main characters in J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings."

  • Fairy tales: Usually intended for children, these fairy tales and folk tales are typically set in distant magical worlds where fairies, dragons, witches, and other supernatural characters are an accepted truth.

  • Magical realism: Magic such as invisibility and telekinesis are accepted by the characters as a natural part of their otherwise realistic environment.

  • Superhero fiction: In this genre, the protagonist acquires special abilities through external means, such as Peter Parker getting his powers and identity as Spider-man, from being bitten by a radioactive spider.

  • Historical Fantasy: This genre is set in a real-world historical period. These stories frequently offer an alternate version of history in which magic and/or supernatural creatures exist, with a strong emphasis on historical accuracy (non-supernatural elements).

  • Dark fantasy: Combining elements of fantasy and horror, its aim is to unnerve and frighten the audience, for example "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children"

GENRE CONCLUSIONS

A result that I gained from my audience survey indicated that they thought my concept was in the fairy tales sub genre, which was interesting to me because I had not thought of it in that way before.

I believe that it encompasses multiple different aspects of fantasy sub genres. In particular I think that my animation includes lots of traits from the historical fantasy genre.
