INITIAL IDEAS
LO1 1.1 - 1.2
This is my final major project following two years of Creative Media Production UAL.
I have decided to make a 2D animation for my FMP because this is the pathway that I would like to take after finishing this course. The aim of this project is to demonstrate the skills I've gained over the past two years, which is my intention for this project.
Because I am doing an animation, and this course has been heavily centered around live production, this means that I am pushing myself to do a more challenging idea.
I thought that writing down my initial ideas would help me choose between them more efficiently through process of elimination so I decided to create a mind map outlining each concept using the Canva app, which has been helpful for presenting my research and pre-production work for all of my projects.
IDEA 1: CAT
MOOD BOARDS
My first idea is about a black cat that symbolises darkness, and journeys through a street giving a commentary on its experience and how people interact with it.
I believe that by using this idea, I can experiment with light and dark aspects of animation and study how cats move in depth.

I also included a colour pallet to demonstrate the kind of colours that will be used throughout.

IDEA 2: WARRIOR

My second idea involves a character that I created in my sketchbook (top left of mood board). This is a drawing of a fantasy character with a samurai inspired hat sitting on a tree log holding a bow.
I think this would be an interesting idea to use for my animation, and I would have lots of research opportunities, such as Japanese warriors, culture, history and fantasy world building.

In Unit 12 I wrote an essay titled "What is the secret of Studio Ghibli's magical storytelling?" As Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio this could be used to inform this concept.

IDEA 2: CIRCUS

This third idea is based on a carousel that I saw on a visit to Wales. It is about an abandoned circus that comes alive at night, including many different circus animals.

Doing this idea would give me an opportunity to experiment with different styles and vibrant colours.

Initially I decided that I would like to create a story surrounding a mysterious cat. As my ideas developed, I found that I preferred the "warrior" concept, and began developing these ideas from there.
